Resources

I thought it would be helpful to create a resource page that you can always come to for all of your investing needs. I’ll add to it as I learn more, but you’ll notice that in the future I will reference this page quite often. I recommend bookmarking it for your reference and convenience. Enjoy!

Disclosure: Please note that some of the links below are affiliate links and I will earn a commission if you purchase through those links (at no extra cost to you). These are all things that I have experience with that I am recommending because they are helpful and are companies that I trust, not because of the commissions that I may earn from you using these products. Please do not spend money unless you feel it’s for something you really need and will help you reach your goals.

Hedge Fund Strategies

  • AlphaClone: I use this tool to create stock strategies that piggyback some of the hedge fund world’s smartest stock pickers.  Use it to go beyond just reading what hedge funds are buying and selling — AlphaClone is a real portfolio tool.
  • Hedgeable: Up 11% in 2011 (S&P 500 -4%).  This investment advisor uses techniques hedge funds use to try and make you money in down and up markets.  Really modest fees (some of their money management services are free).

Insider Trading Strategies

  • BlueTrader: Really one of the best insider trading data/ideas platforms I’ve seen.  There are real-time alerts, analytics, watchlists, and even sector-level ideas to see how insiders are positioning themselves across the economy.  Bullish alerts have performed very well over time.
  • J3SG:  Smart Tradestreaming readers know the value in following insider trading moves.  One of the best sites to do this with is J3SG.  It’s real easy to get insider moves on specific companies.

Online Investment Advisors

  • Personal Capital: This firm is run by some of the pioneers of online finance and provides a very low-cost way of using a professional investment advisor.  Also has a portfolio tool so you can see all of your accounts in one place.

ETF Portfolio Manager Software

  • MarketRiders: MarketRiders provides ETF and index fund portfolios.  Uses a quick, down-and-dirty risk measurement tool to create a personalized, low-cost ETF portfolio.  The software Sort of like Turbo Tax for your portfolio.

Portfolio Optimization

  • Jemstep: This tool gives you a one-page view of all your investments, regardless of which broker you have.  From there, it gives your portfolio a health checkup, analyzing each holding and recommending similar holdings that may perform better, be cheaper, or are more aligned with your risk profile.
  • SigFig: Coming soon

Investing-in-a-box

  • Betterment.com: If you’re looking for a simple, easier way to invest, it doesn’t get easier than Betterment.  Instead of worrying about what stocks, funds, ETFs you need to buy, you just pick your risk and your time horizon and Betterment does everything else for you.

P2P Loans

  • Prosper: The numbers look good for lenders (average over 10% returns) who fund borrowers on this loan marketplace.  It’s addictive but it’s another non-correlated/entrepreneurial way to put your money to work.  Risky, but beats 0% in the bank or money market.

Options Strategies

  • BorntoSell: A lot of investors do buy/write combinations, better known as covered calls.  These consist of buying a stock and selling a call option on it.  Covered call strategies are popular for investors seeking more income on their portfolios.  With BtS, there’s no easier way to identify new opportunities or calculate how much income you’ll make from covered calls.

Investment Strategy Research

  • Turnkey Analyst: Now, one of my favorite research tools.  Total value with powerful stock screens.  Quantitative strategies and no B.S. reviews of state-of-the-art investment research.  Backtesting tools and alpha generators.
  • CXO Advisory: I use CXO to review recent literature about investment strategies.  The site does a good job breaking down research and giving me the upshot so I don’t have to wade through each and every piece of academic literature about investing that gets published.

Stock Screeners

  • Finviz: I’ve written about the free version of Finviz a lot.  It’s an amazing stock screener but Finviz Elite is a whole ‘nother category.  You get real time quotes, historical backtesting, correlations, advanced charting, and alerts.  Finviz really is an insanely valuable, totally-underappreciated, tool.
  • Screener.co:  I’ve had the founder of this site on my show and I’ve been real impressed ever since.  It’s probably the most powerful stock screening tool available to individual investors.
  • AAII: The American Association of Individual Investors has some really nifty stock screeners that emulate some of the best and most successful investing strategies.  There’s a lot of free content here as well as a premium version which gives you access to all the screens.
  • Zacks Investment Research: Full of investment screeners, newsletters and other research tools. Still one of the best sources around.

Dividend Stocks

  • MarketGrader.com (Two Week Free Trial): This site has a lot of research on income producing stocks, identifying investment candidates it believes have sustainable dividends.  Load of other strategies and research like growth stocks (GARP) and ETFs.

Emerging fund managers

  • Covestor: Covestor is an online investment advisor with hundreds of  portfolios for investors to choose from.  Identify pros in specific niches (REITs or small caps, for example).  With one click and fair pricing, you get access to their asset management.

Invest in Real Estate

  • Nationwide Foreclosures!: Foreclosure.com is a great resource for those just looking for their first distressed property to invest in and for experienced real estate investors. Largest and deepest listings of properties all over the U.S.

Personal finance tools

  • Mint.com: If you are at all serious about getting a handle on the money flow in and out of your household, Mint is just too easy to use to pass up. From budgeting to planning — soup to nuts.

Financial Jobs, Careers

  • WallStreetOasis: Check out this site’s forums — indispensable for moving your career ahead in investing, banking or finance.  Also, check out WSO’s career guides — especially, the Investment Banking Prep Pack and the Hedge Fund Career guide.
  • Best Practices of Equity Analysts: There is no better book on the business and process of equity research than James Valentine’s. Whether you’re trying to get into the business, just landed an equity research job or looking to brush up on your skills, this book is one of the best resources for professional equity analysts.
  • BenchPrep CFA Prep: This is a great prep course (Level 1, so far) for the CFA.  It’s available via an app for the iPad or online and has like a gazillion review questions, quizzes and just down-and-dirty prep.  Also, much cheaper than many of the offline courses (around $199) + has chat/tutorials.  Real social learning for CFA.
